Save a Rooster!

The holidays are right around the corner and saving turkeys is top of mind for many animal lovers. But who is watching out for the most underappreciated and often neglected farm animal, the humble rooster?

Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary!

We love roosters so much, even our logo features one! Our sanctuary has been saving abandoned, unwanted and need-a-new-home roosters for years. Together with the hens, pigs, cows, goats and other animals, the roosters eat organic ranch food, get lots of love and excellent medical care.

Why are roosters so unwanted?

● Typically chicken farmers need, at most, one rooster for every 10-15 hens; when more roosters are added to the flock, they can become aggressive and can lash out at people if they feel the hens are being threatened.

● It is difficult to determine the sex of a chick, so often a “guaranteed hen” is a rooster. These unneeded and unwanted roosters are typically abandoned, disposed of, or most often slaughtered.

● Many HOA or City/County rules do not allow roosters since they are loud and can crow morning, noon and night.

Why does Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary love roosters?

● Roosters will protect their flock and even put their own lives in harm’s way to keep the flock safe from predators.

● Typically, roosters who are not kept with hens are not aggressive and can even be sweet and cuddly. Therefore Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary has a separate rooster coop area (our Rooster Bachelor Pad!) where our flock of roosters can roam and crow to their hearts’ content.

● Roosters keep the flock in order and keep the hens from wandering at night, they also help them find food.

● With roosters, you will have fertilized eggs you can hatch yourself for free. Some say fertilized eggs are also more nutritious.

● They are the best alarm clocks!
